Citizens Energy Group

Citizens serves about 900,000 people across Central Indiana. Its report for the Indianapolis system, published in May 2026 with 2025 data, lists:

• Hardness: 317 mg/L average (19 gpg), 460 mg/L maximum (27 gpg), 148 to 460 mg/L system-wide. Citizens notes that hardness depends on the source water feeding each treatment plant and offers address-specific figures by phone.
• Sodium: 44 ppm average, 15 to 139 ppm.
• pH: 7.7 average.
• Iron: not detected.
• PFAS: PFBS 0.73 ppt and PFHxA 0.63 ppt on average; 15 other PFAS not detected.

Sources are the White River, Fall Creek and several reservoirs, plus groundwater plants that filter out iron and manganese (Citizens Energy Group).

Indiana American Water, Noblesville Operations

This system's typical water quality sheet lists its area as Noblesville ZIPs 46060 and 46061 and Fishers 46038, supplied by groundwater wells. It gives typical hardness of 350 to 400 mg/L (20 to 23 gpg) and sodium of 34.1 to 90 mg/L. The 2025 report lists 12 wells in four well fields, hardness averages of 385 to 467 ppm at its three plants, and states that the water met state and federal requirements in 2025 (Indiana American Water).

What the reports can't tell you

A utility report describes water as it leaves the plant and moves through the mains. It can't tell you what happens inside your own pipes. Lead, for example, comes mainly from service lines and household plumbing, not the supply; Citizens keeps an online map of service line materials and runs a replacement program for customer-owned lead lines. Hardness at your tap can also sit anywhere inside the ranges above, depending on which treatment plant feeds your street. Citizens will give an address-specific hardness figure by phone, and a simple test at the kitchen faucet confirms it before anyone sizes a softener.

Turning the numbers into a decision
